Why Use Injection Moulding?
There are a number of reasons as to why injection moulding is one of the most popular modern manufacturing techniques, once of which is how quick and efficient the process is, making it ideal for manufacturers to produce large amounts of identical objects that are precise and accurate. The shape of the mould can be as simple, or as complicated as the design requires.
Details and Shapes
When using injection moulding the pressure on a material presses excessively hard against the mould. This allows very specific details and complex geometry to be integrated into the design.
Strength
Strength can be added to the finished product through fillers being used within the injection moulding process, this means that while the product is being moulded the density of the plastic can be reduced. Strength is a key aspect of the plastic part and therefore injection moulding provides the best option.
Excess Plastic
It’s known that injection moulding will produce low excess rates relative to traditional moulding. Waste plastic from manufacturing typically comes consistently from four areas: the sprue, the runners, the gate locations and any overflow material that leaks out of the part cavity itself. Little waste is therefore produced and often if so then the plastic can be recycled.
Plastic Diversity
Through injection moulding you don’t need to use a specific type of plastic as it’s possible to co-inject and integrate more than one type of plastic into the product simultaneously with its production.
Low Labour Costs
Production requires minimal supervision due to the injection moulding equipment running with a self-gating automatic tool, therefore parts can be readily made with little or no assembly needed.
Speed
Speed is another reason why injection moulding is so popular, due to the high output rate of the process it can take on average only 15 to 30 seconds to pass between cycle times. This also depends on which machine is in use.
